The North Carolina Symphony Launches Three-Year Music Residency in Edgecombe County

October 25, 2022, Raleigh, NC – The North Carolina Symphony (NCS), supported by the Simple Gifts Fund of the Anonymous Trust, kicks off a three-year music residency in Edgecombe County, NC, beginning October 26 with an Education Concert at Edgecombe Community College’s Keihin Auditorium. More than 650 students are expected to attend the concert, which uses a range of musical repertoire to teach core musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, tempo, and dynamics. Students prepare for the concert with educational materials provided by NCS and are welcome to participate by singing or playing along to “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

NCS music residencies are designed to develop lifelong skills and foster a sense of community through high-quality live orchestral music and music education experiences. NCS is working with Edgecombe County Public Schools and other community organizations to develop a long-term, immersive presence over the next three years that will have a meaningful impact on the lives of children and adults.

“It is exciting for Anonymous Trust to partner with Edgecombe County Schools, Edgecombe Community College, and the Edgecombe NC Symphony Chapter Board to bring this three-year music residency to the community. We look forward to seeing the benefits of this in-depth programming of our North Carolina Symphony,” said Margaret Turlington of the Simple Gifts Fund.

Other programming projected to take place as part of this residency includes Ensembles in the Schools performances, which are interactive programs for elementary school students; PNC Grow Up Great Music Discovery events combining music and literacy for preschoolers and their families; and master classes in which NCS musicians coach middle and high schoolers on technique and musicianship. Additional programs will be developed with input from students, teachers, and community members.

The Symphony’s annual Holiday Pops concert scheduled for December 6, 2022 and a free summer concert on the Tarboro Town Common offer additional opportunities for the whole community to participate in this exciting residency.

In addition to the generous support of the Simple Gifts Fund of the Anonymous Trust, NCS music education programs are made possible by the State of North Carolina, lead education sustainer Truist, and many other generous supporters.
