The Dr. and Mrs. Preston H. Gada Chair

A native of Buffalo, NY, Joshua DePoint began studying the double bass at the age of nine. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music and a Performer’s Certificate in double bass performance from the Eastman School of Music. He went on to study at the Yale School of Music, graduating with a master’s degree in double bass performance. DePoint was a member of The Orchestra Now, at Bard College, as well as the Albany Symphony. His primary teachers include Donald Palma, James VanDemark, Leigh Mesh, and Peter Lloyd.

In the past, DePoint regularly appeared as a substitute musician with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. A passionate teacher, he enjoys teaching alongside performing. Before joining the North Carolina Symphony, he taught as the double bass instructor at SUNY New Paltz.

When not performing, DePoint lives an active lifestyle, weightlifting and hiking in his free time, and enjoys sharing cooking and mixology with friends and family. He performs on a bass made by luthier Mike Griffin in 2013.
