Pin-Hao Liao

Taiwanese violist Pin-Hao Liao joined the North Carolina Symphony in 2026. Liao previously served as Assistant Principal Viola of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra during the 2025/26 season and held principal viola positions at both The Juilliard School and Taipei National University of the Arts.

Liao earned a master’s degree in music from The Juilliard School under Hsin-Yun Huang and holds a bachelor’s degree from Taipei National University of the Arts.

As a soloist, Liao won the Kuandu New Voice Concerto Competition, performing Bartók’s Viola Concerto with the Taipei National University of the Arts Symphony Orchestra. Liao also earned the Gold Award in the Youth Artist Category at the 2021 Singapore Raffles International Music Festival.

An active orchestral and chamber musician, Liao attended the Asian Youth Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival and School, and Verbier Festival Orchestra on full scholarships. Liao has performed under the direction of renowned conductors including Sir Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Daniele Gatti, Klaus Mäkelä, Lahav Shani, Christoph Eschenbach, and Charles Dutoit. At Juilliard, Liao studied chamber music with esteemed faculty and participated in Juilliard ChamberFest 2025.
