Hoon Chang

The Clarence and Alice Aycock Poe Chair

From Lakewood, Washington, Hoon Chang joined the North Carolina Symphony oboe section at the start of the 2025/26 season.

Initially aspiring to become a concert pianist, Chang began his musical journey on the piano at the age of four. Later, he began taking lessons on the flute and oboe. When he was 16, Chang had the opportunity to attend the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp, studying both oboe and piano. With the guidance of the oboe faculty there, he pivoted to becoming an oboist.

Subsequently, he attended the Interlochen Arts Academy under the instruction of Dr. Dane Philipsen. Chang then attended Arizona State University for his bachelor’s degree, as a student of Martin Schuring.

Chang finished his master’s degree at the Lynn Conservatory of Music, in the studio of Nathan Hughes. While at Lynn, he performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and was on the sub list for the New World Symphony.

Outside of music, Chang also received a degree in psychology at Arizona State University.
