Erik Dyke, double bassist with the North Carolina Symphony since 1978, is a graduate of the University of Michigan and native to Ann Arbor. As a student of Lawrence P. Hurst, Dyke continued studies with Aspen Music Festival, Stuart Sankey, Peter Mercurio, and Music Academy of the West with for many years.
Dyke served as Operations Manager at the Music Academy Summer Festival in Santa Barbara, California, for 25 years. He has also performed at the Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, Las Palmas, Canary Islands Opera, and the Santa Fe Opera.
For many years he performed on the five-string bass—an instrument of Italian/English origin—and on a 1790 Italian four-string model which was long heard with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
Dyke has been a volunteer in the Raleigh city-wide Adopt-a-Stream program and is active in the community. He is married to Anne Larson Dyke; flautist and music educator. Their son Thor is a team swimmer, studying economics at the College of William and Mary. Other interests include small ensemble performance with pianists, singers and ukuleles!
