Javier Hernandez

Javier Hernandez is a graduate of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he completed undergraduate studies with Kurt Muroki and a master’s degree with Jeffrey Turner. At Indiana University, Hernandez frequently collaborated in chamber music with contemporary composers, and his solo recitals were centered around the Italian Classical and Romantic repertoire.

Hernandez grew up in San Antonio, Texas, where he played double bass in the youth orchestra program, YOSA, for six years. His first bass teachers were members of the San Antonio Symphony, Steve Zeserman and Nicholas Browne. Summers in North Carolina were also fundamental parts of his musical education, as he attended the Brevard Music Center and the Eastern Music Festival and studied with former NCS bassist Craig Brown and current principal Leonid Finkelshteyn. Other summer festival fellowships for Hernandez have included the National Orchestral Institute + Fellowship in Maryland and the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Hernandez currently plays on a bass made in 2022 by New Mexico-based luthier Arnold Schnitzer and bows by Vincenzo DeLuccia and Louis Morizot. Outside of music, he enjoys playing and watching a multitude of sports.
