MARC MOSKOVITZ

The William Charles Rankin Chair

The son of a professional violinist, cellist Marc Moskovitz has taken a musical path from North Carolina to Indiana, Berlin, Ohio, Boston, and finally back to North Carolina. Principal cellist of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Ohio, he has also performed and toured with The Boston Pops and The Handel and Haydn Society. His recordings include the music of cello virtuosi David Popper and Alfredo Piatti and premiere recordings of music of Franz Reizenstein and Eric Zeisl. Additionally, he has performed at the Library of Congress and as a guest of the International Piatti Festival in Bergamo, Italy.

A former student of cellists Janos Starker and Gary Hoffman, Moskovitz holds a doctorate from Indiana University and spent a year in Berlin with cellist Wolfgang Boettcher as a Fulbright scholar. A committed scholar, Moskovitz is also author of several books, including Beethoven’s Cello, which earned the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award, and most recently Measure: In Pursuit of Musical Time, which traces the history of musical timekeeping. He has written program notes for orchestras and opera houses in the United States, Germany, Spain, and China, has provided liner notes for the Melba and Naxos record labels, and is a contributor to the The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
